Towards the Future, as a Group
2011 to present
March 2011 marked the beginning of a new era for Porsche Holding. Now fully integrated into the Volkswagen Group, our company continued its growth and internationalization trajectory, mainly in Europe, South America and the ASEAN region. With our "evolve 2030" Strategy, we are sustainably driving the transformation of the automotive sector into an era of electric and digital mobility, with the aim of also playing a leading role as a global sales organization in the new world of mobility.
2011
Common origins. Common future.
From 1 March 2011, Porsche Holding Salzburg (PHS) became a 100% subsidiary of Volkswagen AG and thus an integral part of the most successful European car manufacturer. This closed the circle of the historical evolution that began with the design of the Volkswagen by Ferdinand Porsche and laid the foundation for the successful development of the two Porsche companies from Salzburg and Stuttgart, which today constitute a considerable part of this group as a whole. Porsche and Piëch, the two original shareholder families, continue to play a significant role in the continued development of the automotive group, holding key positions as major shareholders of Volkswagen AG and as members of the Supervisory Board. Through its integration into the Volkswagen Group, Porsche Holding from Salzburg took on new business responsibilities, which in turn triggered rapid growth within the company from 2012 onwards.
2012
Growth in Europe and expansion into South America
Porsche Holding Salzburg took overall responsibility for the Czech Republic market, making Porsche Česká republika the company's second-largest importer, behind only Austria. At the same time, the brands also experienced expansion in some Eastern European markets, such as Albania, Slovakia and Ukraine.
The Volkswagen Group also entrusted us with responsibility for 200 of the Group's own sales outlets in Germany, Spain and Poland. We continue to expand our presence in China, and from that point on, we start opening new dealerships every year.
In 2012, we opened new horizons as a company by starting to operate as an importer in Colombia. This also provided us with a first experience in the sale and distribution of trucks.
2013 – 2015
Steps in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina
We continued our expansion in South America in 2013 with the new market of Chile, where we operate as importers and in the retail sector. As Porsche Holding Salzburg now had 100 percent import responsibility in Croatia with the founding of Porsche Croatia. The takeover of import operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2015 was a further step in Porsche Holding's growth strategy. It is therefore represented as an importer in all the successor states of the former Yugoslavia.
2016
Expansion into the ASEAN region
Porsche Holding Salzburg launched its first distribution activities in the ASEAN region, taking over responsibility for Volkswagen Passenger Cars' wholesale activities in Malaysia in September 2016, followed by Singapore in April 2017.
2017
Reorganisation of retail trade in France
In the summer of 2017, Porsche Holding Salzburg reorganized its sales operations in France, selling all PGA dealerships offering models outside the Volkswagen Group. The newly founded Volkswagen Retail France Group (VGRF) has brought together all operations sold exclusively by Volkswagen Group brands. We expanded our sales network in France at the end of 2017 with a group of private dealers in the north of the country.
2018
Growth in Italy
After France, Porsche Holding Salzburg focused on Italy: we drove strategic growth in 2018 with the acquisition of several independent dealerships in northern Italy, including Bergamo.
2019
Expansion into Japan and Portugal
The next step of expansion took us to the ASEAN region: Porsche Holding Salzburg signed an agreement at the beginning of 2019 to take over the Group-owned Volkswagen dealerships in Japan. We also acquired Portuguese importer Sociedade de Importação de Veículos Automóveis (SIVA) in October. At the same time, the importer's own retail company, SOAUTO, with operations in Lisbon and Porto, was transferred to Porsche Holding Salzburg.
2020
Growth in Europe and Japan
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Porsche Holding managed to continue its strategic growth in 2020. This included the expansion of the brand portfolio to incorporate the Spanish SEAT and CUPRA, as well as the acquisition of Audi's retail business, owned by the Group, in Tokyo and Osaka; the Erre Esse Group in Turin; and Auto Wichert dealerships in Hamburg. At the same time, Porsche Holding completed its largest investment in the retail sector in 2020, totalling 70 million euros, with Porsche Wien Liesing.
2021
Acquisitions in Italy, France and Germany
Despite difficult economic conditions, Porsche Holding Salzburg continued its growth in 2021. In Italy, the acquisition of the two automotive retail groups Rinaldi S.p.A. in Piedmont and Baistrocchi S.p.A. in Emilia-Romagna adds new locations to Eurocar Italia. In the autumn, the Suffren car dealership, located near the Eiffel Tower, became part of the sales and distribution network of the Volkswagen Retail France Group. The car dealership Möbus in Berlin has expanded the German sales and distribution network of the Volkswagen Retail Germany Group.
2022
Investments with a Sense of proportion
Porsche Holding Salzburg continued its course of growth and investment with a sense of proportion in the third year of the crisis. At the same time, we further expanded our presence in strategic markets such as China, Japan and Germany. The company also entered the Swiss market with a Porsche dealership on Upper Lake Zurich.
2023
Record sales
Porsche Holding Salzburg highlights its strong position even in times of instability: despite geopolitical turmoil, economic recession, widespread price increases and stubbornly high inflation, as well as a noticeable reluctance of consumers to buy. As a result, this turbulent year for the automotive sector concluded successfully and profitably, reaching an all-time high for the third time in a row after the temporary decline recorded in 2020, the first year of the coronavirus pandemic.
2024
New growth with Italy and Sweden
In 2024, Porsche Holding Salzburg reached another milestone with the transfer of responsibility for the management of the two wholesale markets in Italy and Sweden, thus laying the foundation for future growth. Italy is one of the five largest automotive markets in Europe, and Sweden is a pioneer in electric mobility and digitalization.
2025
Sustained growth
For the first time, Porsche Holding Salzburg surpassed the €40 billion barrier in turnover, while deliveries of new and used vehicles increased to more than 1 million units – new records made possible by the newly assumed market responsibilities in Italy and Sweden. Driven by the excellent performance of its more than 36,900 employees worldwide, the company once again consolidated its position as Austria's highest-turnover company.
